A blue print for Net Zero

Achieving Net Zero requires smart strategies and efficient use of resources to turn theory into action. From reducing buildings’ carbon footprints to increasing biodiversity, it’s vitally important to balance capacity, cost efficiency and environmental impact to deliver long term value. As part of our commitment to supporting our clients in their decarbonisation and energy transition journeys, we’ve developed Net Zero blueprints which can be used as a basis for change across the transport, health, education, justice, and local authority sector.

Our blueprints provide a starting point, which can then be tailored to meet the unique needs of various facilities while aligning with national sustainability targets such as Scotland’s ‘Mission Zero’ initiative and best practice standards .

By leveraging our data-driven approach and innovative technologies, we identify opportunities for carbon reduction, energy savings, and alternative energy sources to drive long-term resilience.

Our expert knowledge ensures we meet and exceed industry best standards.

Our approach is tailored to each client’s estate, assets, and sustainability objectives, ensuring a clear pathway to achieving Net Zero.

Leveraging our in-house expertise in consulting, energy, and data, we conduct a thorough survey of the estate to establish baseline figures and align with the client’s decarbonisation goals. Our expert knowledge ensures we meet and exceed industry best standards, such as BREEAM Excellence and other recognised building standards benchmarks for sustainability and performance. We focus on four key areas: energy, renewable generation, heat decarbonisation, and carbon offsetting, creating a tailored, standards-driven roadmap for long-term decarbonisation.

Our comprehensive survey examines every aspect of the estate to create a feasible, achievable, and desirable roadmap to Net Zero with support from our expert teams.

We begin by assessing current energy use and carbon emissions, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, lower the carbon footprint, and enhance indoor environmental quality. Based on these insights, we develop a prioritised roadmap that guides the journey toward achieving exemplar Net Zero status.

We understand the importance of supporting and nurturing behavioural change to meet Net Zero.

Our approach focuses on thoroughly evaluating existing measures to identify opportunities for energy efficiency and optimisation upgrades, with the aim of surpassing these to achieve energy excellence. This includes improvements to building management systems (BMS), HVAC systems, and efficient lighting solutions, all aimed at optimising usage. In addition, we evaluate the feasibility of various renewable energy solutions, such as solar PV systems, carport arrays, and other innovative generation methods, to help reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

Another key element is our focus on retrofit in areas such as building fabric enhancements, which can play a crucial role in energy performance. Measures like upgrading insulation, cladding, and glazing can significantly enhance a building’s efficiency . To further optimise operations, we guide clients in transitioning from fossil fuel-based heating systems to greener alternatives like air-source heat pumps or hybrid solutions, aligning with their sustainability goals and demand requirements.

Finally, we understand the importance of supporting and nurturing behavioural change to meet Net Zero objectives. From how resources are used, right through to strategy, behaviours can be vital in achieving energy and performance. By supporting clients with targeted staff training and awareness initiatives, we drive a culture of sustainability, ensuring long-term commitment to energy-saving and sustainability.

We present a comprehensive roadmap tailored to each site.

Once surveys are complete, we present a comprehensive roadmap tailored to each site, detailing potential carbon and energy savings, implementation costs, and expected payback periods. For example, interventions like BMS optimisation can generate energy savings of over 30 tCO₂e annually with a payback period of just one year. This offers tangible and affordable solutions, helping utilise savings to reinvest in deeper more complex decarbonisation challenges, such as renewable solutions like solar PV which will provide long-term carbon reductions and increase operational lifespan; helping our clients build resilience in a changing landscape.

This approach ensures clients can prioritise cost-effective, high-impact interventions while planning for long-term investments. Our roadmap includes a “carbon waterfall” visualisation to demonstrate how each measure contributes toward Net Zero targets. Additionally, we guide clients through funding applications, such as Salix and PSDS funding, and explore external carbon offsetting to address residual emissions.

We understand that achieving Net Zero is more than a series of technical upgrades—it’s about creating a sustainable, scalable strategy that delivers long-term value. By balancing the technical aspects, and taking into account environmental impact, we ensure that every intervention contributes to a future-ready, cost-effective route to Net Zero.
