Manual reporting, paper-based risk assessments, and delayed updates between site teams and supervisors are still common in highways operations. This slows decisions, limits visibility, and leaves avoidable safety and productivity risks unaddressed.

Amey set out to change this by working closely with FYLD. FYLD uses AI to turn frontline work into real-time, structured intelligence, supporting right-first-time delivery and more predictable outcomes.

Together, we have developed a digital operating platform for highways operations. We’ve worked to extend and complement FYLD’s frontline intelligence platform with capabilities that closely align with Amey’s MySafety process and Highways Digital Strategy, enabling safer and more efficient frontline work.

The challenge

Managing highways operations without real-time intelligence

Imagine managing highway operations where critical information is captured manually. Risk assessments are on paper, and site updates arrive too late to influence decisions. Supervisors lack real-time insight into field activity, while frontline teams spend valuable time on administration rather than delivery.

The result is slower decision-making, inconsistent safety practices, and avoidable productivity risks.

At the same time, pressure on the highway networks you manage continues to grow. Legacy tools and fragmented processes struggle to meet demand, climate-driven disruption, and tighter budgets, making consistent delivery harder at scale.

This is the reality facing many large-scale highway operations today. For Amey, the challenge was to modernise frontline highway operations across a large, dispersed workforce. Any solution had to give supervisors real-time insight into field activity and improve safety without adding complexity.

It also needed to reduce administrative burden, strengthen dynamic risk assessment, and replace fragmented processes with a single AI-driven platform. The platform had to be intuitive, widely adopted, and capable of supporting safer and more efficient delivery at scale.

In short, highway operators needed better real-time visibility, lower administrative burden, and stronger safety assurance across complex, live networks.

Our approach

Using AI to transform highways operations

Amey partnered with FYLD to deploy an AI-enabled digital platform across its highway operations. The aim was clear. Use real-time frontline intelligence to improve safety, visibility, and consistency at scale.

AI was to be embedded directly into everyday workflows, supporting risk assessment, safety prompts, and decision-making rather than operating as a standalone tool.

Rather than rolling out a fixed solution, the platform was shaped around the realities of live highway delivery. Amey and FYLD worked together to apply AI where it could make a practical difference in day-to-day work, including:

  • Dynamic risk assessments at the point of work
  • Real-time activity logging from site
  • AI-driven safety prompts based on observed site behaviours

This approach gave supervisors immediate visibility of activity on the ground, with reporting structured around Amey’s operational and safety KPIs. In practice, this enables:

  • Faster, better-informed decision-making
  • Improved coordination across multiple sites
  • More consistent performance aligned to operational and safety standards

FYLD was then integrated into existing operational processes and safety systems, allowing teams to adopt the platform quickly without replacing familiar ways of working or adding unnecessary complexity.

Through this approach, FYLD’s frontline intelligence platform has been extended and tailored into a co-developed operational platform for Amey’s highways workforce. It reflects Amey’s ambition to apply AI where it delivers real value today, while preparing for digitally enabled highways delivery at scale.

The outcome

Safer delivery, faster mobilisation, and real-time operational insight

The deployment of FYLD has delivered clear, measurable improvements across Amey’s highway operations, demonstrating the value of applying AI in practical, frontline environments. Key outcomes are set out below:

  • During the pilot phase, the platform was used across more than 500 live jobs, strengthening point-of-work risk assessment coverage and significantly improving safety assurance on site. The platform has since been used across 1,900+ jobs across Amey’s highways contracts.
  • Pre-work assessment time was reduced by up to 50 percent, helping teams mobilise more quickly and reducing delays before work begins. With less paperwork and faster information flow, day-to-day workflows became simpler and more efficient.
  • Supervisors gained real-time visibility of activity on the ground, supporting better-informed decisions and improved coordination across sites. This was reinforced by high levels of adoption, with over 80 percent of frontline users actively using the platform during pilot deployments.
  • Improved data quality and consistency have also strengthened performance management and contract reporting, providing clearer insight into safety, delivery, and operational trends. The platform’s design supports consistent deployment across Amey’s UK highways contracts, with the foundations in place for wider rollout as operations scale.
  • Across live operations, the platform has helped teams identify and control more than 12,000 on-site hazards, demonstrating the scale of risk being surfaced and managed in real time.

Together, these outcomes show how FYLD is helping Amey deliver highways services that are safer, more efficient, and better equipped for the demands of modern infrastructure delivery.

In practice, this has led to higher safety coverage, faster mobilisation, stronger adoption, and better operational insight across highways contracts.

“It’s a faster, easier-to-use system that improves hazard identification, evidence gathering, and remote supervision. It supports continuous learning, coaching, and record-keeping while making past jobs and content much easier to navigate.”

Highways Operations Specialist, Amey

“Highways are the backbone of how communities stay connected and economies keep moving. That’s why this partnership is such an important step forward. Working with FYLD puts us ahead of the curve on digital transformation and gives our frontline teams smarter, faster, and more consistent ways of delivering the essential services communities rely on every day.”

Kyle Clough, Sector Business Director, Amey

“We built FYLD to help modernise how critical infrastructure is delivered and maintained, particularly in sectors where safety, scale, and public impact intersect. Bringing real-time visibility and targeted AI into field operations at scale with Amey is a significant step toward making that work more efficient and sustainable. It’s also a great example of how proven innovation can move quickly to become an operational standard.”
