The challenge

Amey provides planned and reactive asset and facilities management services to over 130 schools across the UK.

Edinburgh City Council urgently required a solution to enhance its teaching capacity at Castleview Primary School to respond to the growing need of the local community. The Council required a supplier to develop a solution that would provide additional learning space for 190 pupils and increase the floor space of the school campus by approximately 20%.

Due to urgent demand the Council required any solution to be developed in a short 12-week timeframe, and due to the limited campus footprint, any solution would have to be flexible to accommodate any additional growth and demand in future.

Amey’s response

As the existing facilities management provider, Amey was appointed as the principal designer, and we worked with our specialist supply chain to develop a state-of-the-art modular building proposal that could meet the significant challenges posed in terms of timeframe and footprint.

The Council initially requested four separate teaching areas, but this was later increased to an additional six high-specification general purpose classrooms.

Amey undertook investigations to inform the design phase – which enabled the Council to develop a scheme that would meet the needs of all stakeholders. The proposed solution was provided over two storeys, with an internal passenger lift being provided to ensure full accessibility could be achieved.

Off-site fabrication, onsite groundworks, and service connections commenced at the same time, allowing the team to stay on track to the ambitious project timeframe.

Outcomes

Unit installation was undertaken over a mid-term break reducing disruption to all stakeholders
Building was wind and watertight in just over 4 days
The project has enhanced the school’s teaching environment for the teachers and pupils
Works were carried out over twelve weeks and handed back at the start of a new term
