Amey’s use of cookies

What are cookies and similar technologies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your browser when you visit a website. They are widely used in order to make web sites work efficiently, and they provide information to website operators to help make it easier for you to visit the site again and to analyse how users interact with the site.

Amey also uses similar technologies to perform similar functions. These include web beacons, tags, pixels, software development kits (SDKs), scripts, local storage, and device identifiers which can be used to collect information from browsers, applications and devices for purposes similar to cookies.

Cookies and similar technologies may be used for the purposes set out in this notice.

Why are cookies used?

We use cookies to:

  • Ensure our websites function properly;
  • Remember your browsing preferences when you visit our sites so that we can give you a better site experience;
  • Collect information about how visitors use our websites and content so that we can understand usage, improve performance and enhance our services;
  • Measure engagement with our websites, services and, where applicable, our digital communications or advertising campaigns; and
  • Provide security and fraud prevention measures.

How are cookies used? When do we ask for consent?

Some cookies and similar technologies are strictly necessary for our websites or services to function properly. These are used without asking for consent because they are required to provide the service you request.

In some cases, we may also use cookies or similar technologies without consent where a specific exception under applicable law applies, for example where they are used solely for fraud prevention, service delivery, accessibility settings, limited statistical purposes to help us improve our websites or services, or to reflect a user’s appearance or functionality preferences. Where we rely on such an exception, we will provide clear information and an appropriate means to object where required.

For cookies and similar technologies that are not covered by a legal exception, including advertising, cross-site or cross-device tracking, measuring engagement with our websites, or other non-essential technologies, we will request your consent before placing them on your device or accessing information stored on it. You can withdraw or change your cookie preferences at any time using the cookie preference centre on our websites.

What are the different types of cookies?

The specific cookies and similar technologies used on our websites may change over time as we update our websites, services and suppliers. A current and detailed list of the cookies and similar technologies used on our sites, including their providers, purposes and retention periods, is made available through the pop-up cookie preference centre available on our sites.

We use the following categories of cookies and similar technologies:

  • Strictly necessary cookies – required for core functionality of our websites, security and to remember your cookie preferences.
  • Preference or functional technologies – used to remember user settings or choices, like the region that you are in, and improve the user experience.
  • Statistical or analytics technologies – used, where permitted by law, to understand how visitors use and interact with our websites and to help us improve them.
  • Marketing and targeting technologies – used where relevant for embedded services, social sharing, campaign measurement or other third-party features. They can be used to track visitors across websites and display ads that are relevant for users.

In jurisdictions where permitted by law, including under certain exemptions introduced by the UK’s Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, some analytics, performance, functionality and limited statistical analysis technologies used to improve our website or service may be used without consent, provided that the appropriate information and objection mechanisms are made available. If the technology is used for advertising, user tracking, profiling, cross-site monitoring or other non-exempt purposes, we will request consent before using it.

What information is collected using cookies?

Depending on the technologies used, we may collect information such as cookie identifiers which allow websites to recognise users, IP address information, browser and device information, and information about how users interact with our websites or digital content. Where such information can be linked to an identifiable individual, it is treated as personal data and handled in accordance with applicable data protection laws and our Privacy Notice. We do not intend to collect special category personal data or criminal offence data through cookies and similar technologies.

Can the use of cookies be controlled?

Yes. You can manage cookies and similar technologies using the pop-up cookie preference centre on our sites, which allows you to accept, reject or change your cookie preferences at any time. Withdrawal of consent will not affect any processing that was carried out before withdrawal.

Where we rely on a legal exception to use certain cookies or similar technologies without consent, we will also provide an appropriate and simple way for you to object where required.

You can also use your browser settings to view, block or delete cookies already stored on your device. Please note that strictly necessary cookies cannot usually be disabled through our cookie preference centre, as they are required for core functionality of our websites. If you block these through your browser, parts of the site may not function properly. Browser guidance can be found on the relevant browser provider’s website.
