Amey Early Careers colleagues raise over £18,000 for Cancer Research UK in nationwide challenge

Amey’s Early Careers colleagues have raised an impressive £18,548 for Cancer Research UK after taking on a six-week charity challenge that saw apprentices and graduates complete a range of fundraising activities and personal challenges in support of the charity.

Twenty apprentices, graduates and early careers colleagues from across the business participated in the 2026 Early Careers Charity Challenge, an initiative designed to develop skills including teamwork, communication, leadership, innovation and project management while supporting Amey’s chosen charity partner, Cancer Research UK.

Working in three teams, participants organised and delivered a wide range of fundraising activities between July and August, including the National Three Peaks Challenge, a Tube Challenge covering every London Underground station in under 24 hours, charity sporting events, bake sales, car washes, hikes and a variety of other community fundraising initiatives across the UK.

Together, the teams raised more than three times their original fundraising target of £6,000, highlighting the commitment, determination and creativity of Amey’s early careers community.

The challenge concluded with Team TBC (To Beat Cancer) raising £6,887, The Complex Curesaders raising £6,383 and Sweaty 4 Science raising £5,278. Collectively, participants exceeded expectations and demonstrated the passion, commitment and determination of Amey’s Early Careers community.

Declan Kiely, Apprentice Signalling Engineer at Amey, said: “Taking part in Amey’s Early Careers Charity Challenge was an incredibly rewarding experience. It gave me the opportunity to challenge myself, work as part of a team, and get to know graduates and apprentices from across the business.

“My colleague Jake and I cycled more than 400 miles from Edinburgh to London over seven days, following the route of the East Coast Main Line. The determination to complete such a demanding challenge came from seeing the impact cancer has had on people close to me, including my grandad. I am proud to have played a part in supporting Cancer Research UK’s work, helping to make a difference for families affected by the disease.”

Nyasha Mutembwa, Graduate Engineer at Amey, said: “When I first heard about the Early Careers Charity Challenge during my summer placement, I hoped I would get the opportunity to take part one day. I helped raise money through sponsored hikes, weekly 5K runs and bake sales. Like many of my Early Careers colleagues, I have seen the impact cancer can have on loved ones, so supporting Cancer Research UK was particularly important to me.

“The challenge gave me the opportunity to support a cause I care deeply about while working alongside an inspiring group of colleagues who were all committed to making a difference. It also helped me build confidence, develop new relationships across the business and strengthen my sense of belonging since joining Amey as a graduate.”

The Early Careers Charity Challenge is one of several initiatives available through Amey’s Early Careers programme, which offers apprenticeships, graduate opportunities and placements across a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, consultancy, project management, rail, highways and operational services.
