Amey recognised for engineering excellence at the NCE Bridges Awards 2026

Amey celebrated double success at this year’s New Civil Engineer (NCE) Bridges Awards, with its A98 Banff Bridge Scour Protection Works winning the Innovation in Climate Resilience award and engineer Saul Gilbert being named Rising Star for his contribution to the management of the iconic M48 Severn Bridge.

Delivered in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council, Amey’s A98 Banff Bridge Scour Protection Works combined innovative scour protection measures with real-time monitoring technology to help safeguard the historic Category A listed bridge against the increasing impacts of extreme weather and climate change. The award recognised the team’s ability to balance engineering innovation, resilience and heritage preservation while protecting a vital transport link for future generations.

Amey’s commitment to developing the next generation of engineering talent was also recognised, with Bridge Engineer Saul Gilbert named Rising Star for his contribution to the long-term stewardship of the M48 Severn Bridge as part of Amey’s work with National Highways. Having joined Amey through its graduate programme in 2021, Saul has quickly established himself as a key member of the Specialist Bridge Inspection and Maintenance team, supporting critical inspections, structural assessments and maintenance strategies on one of the UK’s most complex bridge assets.

Speaking on his win, Saul Gilbert, Bridge Engineer at Amey, said: “I am incredibly proud to have received this award. Over the last five years at Amey, I’ve been fortunate to work on a range of challenging projects on the M48 Severn Bridge, from inspections and assessments through to major renewal schemes.

“Working on the bridge has given me the chance to tackle some fascinating engineering challenges and work alongside many talented and experienced engineers across the bridge industry. I am grateful to all the colleagues and mentors who have supported me along the way. I appreciate the opportunities Amey has provided, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the exciting projects we have coming up over the next few years.”
